Curfew, vaccinations curb COVID case count by almost 80%

June sees drastic drop in cases compared to May; Deaths too take a sharp dive

PANJIM: After recording a high COVID-19 test positivity rate in May when the second wave at its peak, the situation in Goa witnessed a sharp, almost 80 per cent drop in cases, the following month. 

The State-wide curfew imposed since May 9, coupled with a high rate of vaccination, helped the State administration bring the second-wave of COVID-19 under control. 

The month of June ended with 11,023 cases being reported in the 30 days, which is hardly 20 per cent of the total cases reported in May which was 64,594. 

The daily positivity rate, which had been hovering between 45 and 50 per cent until last month, reported a drastic fall in June and stood below 6 per cent by the end of the month. 

Though the COVID-19 related fatalities continued even in June, the situation was more under control, with daily death figure dropping below ten. As many as 327 patients succumbed to the infection during the month as against 1,481 deaths reported in May. 

There were 21,107 patients who recovered.  The State’s active case tally which was at 12,763 by May 31, dropped to 2,274 by the end of June.

Since the outbreak of the virus last year, the State has had 1,66,689 confirmed cases of Coronavirus of which 1,61,361 patients have recovered while 3,054 died.
