Curtailed monsoon Assembly session commences today

PANJIM: The curtailed two-week long monsoon session of the State Legislative Assembly will commence on Monday, July 11. The session is less likely to be stormy as the main Opposition saw its MLAs divided into two groups just a day before the session. Congress was busy firefighting internal differences as over half a dozen MLAs were determined to switch sides to the BJP.

A total of 574 starred and 1,587 unstarred questions will be tabled during the monsoon session along with 20 calling-attention motions, zero-hour mention, and private member resolutions. The State Budget 2022-23, which was tabled on March 30, will be passed during the monsoon session.

Secretary Legislature Namrata Ulman said that since the session is for two weeks, “The obituary and congratulatory references will be made by Speaker (Ramesh Tawadkar) during the session. In addition to the starred, unstarred questions, calling attention motion, and Zero Hour, there will be a discussion on the motion of thanks on the Governor’s address. General discussion on the Budget 2022-23 and demands for grants will also be taken up while private members business will be on Friday after which the session will continue,” she said.

Ulman said that in wake of COVID-19, students and visitors are not allowed to attend the session.

While the Congress’ top brass were busy trying to keep their MLAs intact, the Opposition bench is expected to raise certain issues in the Assembly such as irregularities in police recruitments, poor quality roads, opposition to three linear projects, and inquiry into land grabbing.

The Assembly session, which was earlier notified to be held from July 11 to August 12, 2022, was curtailed to two weeks.

In a sudden development on the eve of the monsoon session, the Speaker on Sunday withdrew the notification for Deputy Speaker’s elections against the backdrop of rumours about some Congress MLAs joining the BJP.
