PANJIM: Former Goa Assembly Speaker Tomazinho Cardozo on Monday said that curtailing of Assembly sessions is a bad trend and long duration sessions are required for the government to be strong.
Commenting on the state of Goan politics, Tomazinho said, “For government to be strong, Opposition has to be strong and therefore duration of Assembly sessions should be long enough to give time for Opposition members.”
He said that no one is bothered about the people. Defectors are re-elected except in Salcete taluka. Defections have become a way of life and money power is supreme, he added.
Tomazinho recalled that when he was the Speaker, defections had just started and MLAs were just learning the ropes. Today defections have become a way of life and money is a major factor in politics. He said both – people and MLAs – are to blame for this. People are unable to understand democracy, he said.
