PONDA: The Curti-Khandepar locals on Wednesday demanded widening of the service road at Curti for two-way traffic to prevent accidents on narrow median gap on the National Highway (NH).
It may be recalled that after a fatal accident at Curti recently, the gap in the median NH was closed following protests from the local people. It is mostly used by truckers for roadside parking.
Left with no other option, local vehicles started using the narrow median gap at Copperwada Junction for crossing the NH. However it is proving dangerous and leading to several accidents during night time. Recently four vehicles, including two buses, and two cars met with accidents. One car was badly damaged on the spot.
Local resident Sandeep Parkar said in order to avoid accidents at the narrow accident- prone median gap, he suggested that the service road connecting the underpass should be widened and converted into two-way traffic so that people are not required to cross the median gap.
The locals from Copperwada said that commuters could travel safely if the service road is widened for two-way traffic. For this, the encroachments on service road need to be cleared.
