Curtorim MLA urges CM to check MPT’s arbitrary interpretation of port limits

MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Tuesday alleged that the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) is arbitrarily interpreting the port limits notification to suit its own vested interests.

In the letter addressed to the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, he appealed to intervene in the matter and to ensure that the State’s assets and its people are protected from MPT’s actions.

MLA said that MPT officials are harassing the shack owners in South Goa to obtain no objection certificate for erecting shacks, which they claim is within their port limits.

“For the past many years, I have been repeatedly stating both within and outside the House of the Goa legislative Assembly that the MPT is arbitrarily interpreting the port limits notification to suit its own vested interests. I urged the CM to intervene in the matter to ensure that the State’s assets and its people are protected from MPT’s nefarious designs,” said Reginaldo.

He further stated that by interfering with shack owners in South Goa, MPT—in anticipation of its impending corporatisation and privatisation under the Major Ports Authorities Act 2021—is now testing the mood, patience and perseverance of Goans.
