Curtorim MLA urges govt to extend tenure of MCoCs by one year

MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has written to Revenue Minister Jennifer Monserrate on behalf of the members of the Comunidades of Goa, to extend the tenure of the Managing Committees of Comunidades (MCoCs) in Goa by a further period of one year i.e. from December 2021 to December 2022.

The Congress legislator also informed the Minister that he had put the aforesaid matter in the form of Zero Hour Mention in the recently-concluded Goa Assembly session but that it did not come up for discussion.

He added that he had received calls and messages from the members of the MCoCs to put forward such a request to the State government.

“Concurrently, being a member of Comunidades of Goa, I too very well understand the challenges and the problems being faced by its members and its management committees. And as your good self is aware that I have been constantly raising the diverse issues affecting Comunidades including the illegalities in the Sale and Encroachment of Comunidade land across both inside and outside the House of the Goa Legislative Assembly,” said Reginaldo.

He explained that the MCoCs across Goa took charge of their office only in March 2019 and have worked practically only for nine months till December 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The New Inscriptions of Gaunkars as well as the annual Matriculas of Gauncars could not be carried out regularly due to the COVID -19 pandemic since offices could not function,” Reginaldo added.

“It is also given to understand that in December 2021–January 2022, new elections will be conducted while the list of able voters which has not been duly prepared and is bound to have many flaws which will give rise to many election petitions in the administrative tribunal,” the MLA added further.

He appealed that the term of MCoCs across Goa may be extended by one year so that justice could be done for all holding the offices and also to facilitate the smooth handing over of the offices of Comunidades to the new Management Committees in the year 2023.
