MARGAO: Fed up with the continuous fire at Sonsoddo, Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo has written to the Chairman of the Goa State Pollution Control Board seeking his intervention to stop the fire and stop pollution in the area.
Pointing out that the board has the task of ensuring that pollution parametres are strictly observed, he expressed surprise that the dump site continues to be burning for the third day and wondered what action was taken to stop this major health hazard to his constituents and neighbouring areas.
Pointing out that even the Board has failed to take any action in the matter he said he is “anguished at the manner in which the government and concerned statutory authorities have handled this issue,” and added that all have failed “miserably” to put off the fire.
While reminding that ensuring healthy environment is a paramount responsibility of the government, Reginaldo said that failure to do so, cannot be pardoned as has happened in Sonsoddo where the fire has threatened the health of the people.
Reginaldo has urged the Board to give an update about the action that has been taken by the board to douse the fire and also to inform what action has been initiated against those responsible for the fire.
While appealing to the chairman to set a legal process to redress the Sonsoddo issue, Reginaldo also called on GSPCB to ascertain what caused the fire.
Reginaldo further reiterated that failure to act in the matter would make the board an abetting partner in the incident, which is actually a crime since it is a grievous health hazard.
