Curtorim villagers halt sand transport

MARGAO: After facing lot of hardships, the residents of Munxiwado, Curtorim, finally lost their calm and stopped the sand transport on Thursday.

The villagers had to face lot of dust and also feared of being crushed by the speeding trucks on the narrow road. Around 50 villagers stopped the vehicles and demanded the transport of sand be stopped immediately.
The people gathered at the bank of the river and stopped the trucks which had come to fill in the sand. Initially, when the people stopped the trucks the transporter tried to trick the villagers and sent empty trucks. One of the trucks even had a name plate written ‘on PWD duty’.
The police were called and they conducted a panchanama.
The Mamlatdar and the Talathi were also called at the site. The villagers forced the authorities to come and sort out the matter.
“The MLA came and took a verbal undertaking from the truck owner to stop the sand transport,” Fatima Viegas, one of the affected persons, told Herald.
The people have been complaining for a long time about the rampant sand extraction and the problems which have risen due to the reckless transport.
The people have also blamed the panchayat for being a mute spectator in the sand extraction fiasco. The group of people had also approached the panchayat during the body meeting on Wednesday.
