Curtorim woman stabbed by husband on I-Day battles for life at GMC

The accused, Joaquim Fernandes, was arrested and remanded in five-day police custody; Maina-Curtorim police recover the assault weapon, a kitchen knife

MARGAO/PANJIM: The Joint Mamlatdar of Salcete recorded the dying declaration of Alcaine Fernandes, a resident of Comartha-Curtorim, Salcete, who was grievously injured after being stabbed by her husband, Joaquim Fernandes, with a kitchen knife.

The incident occurred in the early hours of August 15, just after midnight. Following the attack, Alcaine Fernandes was rushed to Goa Medical College (GMC) in Bambolim, where she is currently undergoing treatment for critical injuries in her abdomen. The police have arrested Joaquim Fernandes, her husband, and recovered the weapon used in the crime.

According to GMC sources, Alcaine was brought to the casualty ward and from there, she was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where she was put on a ventilator.

The Maina-Curtorim police have registered an offence under Section 118(2) BNS, based on a complaint filed by Jerry Fernandes, a relative of the victim. After following all legal procedures, including the recording of Alcaine’s dying declaration, the accused was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) in Margao, where a five-day remand was granted.

The police indicated that the stabbing was the result of sudden provocation. Further investigation into the case is ongoing, led by PSI Praful Giri. The victim has a 21-year-old daughter who is currently abroad, according to the police.
