MARGAO: The village panchayat of Curtorim, in collaboration with locals and MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, has unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at resolving the longstanding garbage issues plaguing the community.
During a press conference in Margao on Wednesday, MLA Lourenco, accompanied by Sarpanch Alxinho D’Silva and concerned citizens, disclosed that individuals have been deployed in Curtorim to monitor and deter illegal dumping of waste along the roadsides.
Presently, the panchayat engages in the collection of dry waste twice a month, a frequency that will be increased to twice a week in the upcoming days. Emphasising a zero-tolerance policy for those contributing to the garbage problem, the local authorities affirmed that fines would be imposed, and waste will promptly be removed from the site.
Acknowledging that garbage ranks among the most significant challenges faced by Curtorim, the panchayat representatives said they are working on establishing a material recovery facility shed in the village.
Additionally, efforts are underway to find a sustainable solution to sewage water-related issues in certain areas within the panchayat’s jurisdiction. A new technology is being considered to treat sewage water, transforming it into potable water.
Sarpanch D’Silva shared recent instances where individuals were caught red-handed dumping waste along roadsides, and fined for the same.
