CVC questions panchayat role towards Carmona farmers

CARMONA: Carmona Villagers Committee (CVC) has questioned the role of the Carmona panchayat towards the agriculturists and farming community in the village.

CVC president Blair Rodrigues said, “We are blessed with agricultural land surrounding the village. The major water drainage of rainwater flowing to River Sal from Varca and Orlim is blocked with soil, mangroves and because of this flooding, most fields are not cultivated. Carmona farmers are the most affected and they suffered a huge loss last year. This year, they have stopped cultivating their paddy fields. Since the River Sal bunds have collapsed at many places, the farmers cannot cultivate their fields. There is no budget allocation to repair the bunds and drainages so as to encourage the farmers to cultivate their fallow paddy fields.”

Urging the Carmona sarpanch Allwyn Jorge to raise this matter with the concerned authorities, the CVC president asked, “Why the Carmona sarpanch was not pursuing the issue of the Carmona Zalor beach boundary dispute despite a committee being constituted as no action has been taken to file a case in the Bombay High Court at Goa.”

Blair said, “Though there’s no issue of garbage dumping in Carmona, the present garbage dumping site on the football ground in Igrezvaddo is not the appropriate spot as the youth utilise this place for their early morning jogging and other exercises, besides playing. There is also a community hall nearby. Although regular garbage collection is undertaken by the panchayat, the Carmona residents need to cooperate by segregating their waste properly as the collected garbage dumped by the Carmona village panchayat at this site stinks.”

“When questioned, the Carmona sarpanch claimed that this would be a temporary garbage dumping site but it now appears to have become a permanent garbage dump yard,” Blair added.
