PANJIM: The Cyber Crime Cell has contacted network providers to submit details of mails sent to victims of online fraud, who claim to have been cheated of around Rs 26 lakh.
The investigation team is probing two cases wherein a senior citizen, Circuncisao Fernandes, and a priest, Vinayak Pendse, have complained of being cheated of Rs 17.93 lakh and Rs 8.16 lakh respectively. “We have approached the SIM providers to furnish us the required details,” PI Rajesh Job told Herald.
In the first case, the 71-year-old had responded to a SMS that claimed he had won over Rs 3 crore as prize money, and to claim the reward he paid lakhs of rupees only to realise later that he was being cheated.
In the second case, Pendse was approached by a person who identified himself as Rajesh Kumar, from RBI Mumbai. Although, he claimed he pays Income Tax without fail, the caller had threatened him of an I-T raid forcing the victim to fall prey to the trap.
