Cyclist urges govt to reconsider new entry fee for Netravali Sanctuary

MARGAO: In a recent appeal, avid cyclist Adv Shashikant S Naik urged the State government to reconsider a new entry charge imposed on cyclists visiting the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary.

Naik, who has always appreciated the sanctuary’s beauty and tranquillity, expressed surprise at being charged Rs 100 during a recent visit.

Cyclists like Naik argue that this entry fee is uncommon for their community, and no prior information about the charge was found on the sanctuary’s website or at the entrance. While acknowledging the importance of supporting conservation efforts, Naik called for clarification on the reason behind imposing this fee on cyclists.

Naik emphasized the significance of promoting sustainable practices and maintaining open communication. The concern is that such fees might discourage individuals from choosing eco-friendly transportation methods to visit the sanctuary. The appeal seeks a reconsideration of this policy for cyclists.

The cyclist’s plea sheds light on the growing debate over the implementation of entry fees for cyclists in wildlife sanctuaries, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that encourages conservation without discouraging environmentally friendly modes of transportation.

Naik is hopeful Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane will take cognisance of their demands. Incidentally, other sanctuary visitors have called for the entry fees to be reduced.
