PANJIM:  The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has compensated 65 fishermen by giving them ex-gratia of Rs 20,000 for the loss of gill nets and Rs 5000 for the damage to their temporary storage caused due to Cyclone Tauktae.

Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral said that many fishermen suffered losses due to damage to their fishing boats, gill nets and temporary storage huts due to gusty winds and rainfall triggered by Cyclone Tauktae on May 16.

“As many as 61 fishermen from Canacona, Mormugao, Bardez and Pernem Talukas reported loss of gill nets and damage to their temporary storage huts,” he said.

“Although fishing vessels were at safety and anchored at the jetty, very high wind speed resulted in vessels colliding against each other and causing minor damages to the fishing vessels and its implements such as fishing nets, motors etc. Even fishing nets, motors, huts were washed away resulting loss to the fishermen,” said Cabral.

Following this, the GCZMA gave ex-gratia to the affected fishermen totalling Rs 11.15 lakh, the Minister said.

“The fishermen whose fishing vessels have been damaged on account of the cyclone may submit their application to the Department of Fisheries for consideration under the Corpus Fund,” he said.
