PANJIM: The Goa government on Tuesday raised the dearness allowance (DA) of nearly 65,000 civil servants and over 22,000 pensioners, from 90 to 100 per cent of the basic, from January 2014. The hiked DA along with arrears would be paid along with the April salary.
“The Union cabinet had approved the proposal to hike DA for its employees and dearness relief for its pensioners to 100 per cent in March. The same has been implemented for Goa government employees,” a senior official said.
The DA is linked to the cost of living and computed on the basis of the consumer price index-industrial workers, or CPI(IW). The State government had increased the dearness allowance by 10 percent in October.
The Goa government spends a whooping Rs 130 crore every month on salaries of government servants. This DA hike will add an additional liability of Rs 35 crore to the state exchequer as arrears. The additional liability due to revised DA would be Rs 8 crore every month, an official added.
The allowance is applicable to all government employees working in departments, government corporations and other autonomous bodies funded by the government.
