Dam water levels satisfactory, there is enough water for next 2 months: WRD Minister

PANJIM: Allaying fears of the people following reports of water levels in four dams of the dams dipping below 50 per cent of their carrying capacity, Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar on Friday said that water levels at dams across the State are satisfactory and there is no need to worry about water scarcity for next two summer months.

Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat at Porvorim, Shirodkar said, Selaulim dam has water enough for 130 days, Tillari dam has water stock for 144 days, Anjunem dam for 70 days  Panchawadi dam for 117 days and Chapoli dam for 450 days. 

As per the data shared by the WRD, the water levels of dams in Goa as on April 4, 2024, was Selaulim 48.7 per cent, Anjunem 38.5 per cent, Amthane 37.4 per cent, Panchwadi 38.5 per cent, Chapoli 58.3 per cent, Gaunem 55.9 per cent and Tillari 94.1 per cent.

Shirodkar said water supply for irrigation will be stopped from May 15 as most crops will be harvested by then.

Last year monsoons had arrived in Goa in the last week of June.  However, the minister said if the monsoon arrives early, then the State would be in a better position.

”Only one thing will have to be seen that how much the work of treatment plants of Public Works Department (PWD)  is completed and how early we can provide them water,” he said.
