MARGAO: In an interesting development, Vice-Chairman of Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) and BJP leader Damu Naik has quit the post on Tuesday.

The former Fatorda MLA tendered his resignation from the post, barely five months after he assumed office. Damu confirmed having tendered his resignation from GSUDA, saying he did so after his appointment as the spokesman of the BJP.

“The post of BJP spokesman demands full time work. That’s the reason why I have quit as GSUDA vice-chairperson”, Damu said, while declining to comment on questions whether he was directed by the party and party-led government to put in his papers.

When contacted, Urban Development Minister and GSUDA Chairman Francis D’Souza confirmed that Damu has quit office.

“Probably, he decided to quit after his appointment as party spokesman. I don’t know the exact reason, but probably his important position in the party may have forced him to quit office”, Francis said.

The BJP government had rewarded Damu with GSUDA vice-chairperson nearly five months ago and the move was seen by many as an attempt to arm the BJP leaders with powers to usher in development of Fatorda along with Margao.

In fact, Damu had promised to clear projects under GSUDA if the Margao Municipal Council mooted any proposal. Local city fathers had hoped that Damu would get projects and help in the city’s development, but the former MLA said he did not receive any proposal from the Margao civic body till date. He had attended the meeting of GSUDA held last week and had cleared many a project in Mapusa and in other urban areas.

Though he had quit GSUDA, Damu will continue to preside the affairs of Ravindra bhavan , Margao as its Chairman.
