Dance bars face the legal music, 11 sealed in Calangute

Only two out of the 13 dance bars operating on the coastal belt had obtained consent to operate from the Pollution Control Board

PANJIM: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Thursday started the process of sealing 11 dance bars and pubs at Calangute after it was found that they were operating without obtaining consent to operate from the GSPCB.

The officials of GSPCB along with the Mapusa Deputy Collector, Bardez Mamlatdar and the Calangute police started sealing 11 of the 13 dance bars and pubs, which were found to be operating in the coastal belt. 

Only two dance bars were found to have obtained consent to operate from the GSPCB.

The establishments sealed were Devils Club, Norms Pub, Black Heart, Shield/Next Level, Three Kings, Mehfil, 39 Steps, Posh Nosh, Tropical 24×7, Codda and Plantain Leaf Rest.  Only two establishments – Chawla Dilwala and Club Tao is learnt to have obtained consent to operate from GSPCB.

Last week, the High Court of Bombay at Goa had asked the Director of Panchayat and the GSPCB to initiate action against allegedly illegal structures situated within the jurisdiction of the Calangute Village Panchayat, which were allegedly illegally operating dance bars and pubs.

The Court has also impleaded the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) as one of the respondents after it was found that five of the structures were put up in areas affected by the CRZ notification. The Court has fixed the next hearing on January 8, 2024.
