MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) was forced to put the recruitment of 5 data operators in abeyance after former chairperson Ghanashyam Shirodkar objected to the process.
Shirodkar raised strong objections to the decision of the civic body to hire 5 data operators from the Goa Human Resource Development Corporation (GHRDC). He made a series of allegations against the functioning of the MMC and questioned why the issue of hiring data operators had not been placed before any of the council meetings and pointed out that no resolution had been passed to hire such persons.
After Shirodkar’s outburst, the MMC Chairperson Lyndon Pereira has moved an official note to the Chief Officer (CO) stating that the appointments will be kept in abeyance till further notice. Pereira referred to the objections raised by Shirodkar including the fact that the minutes of the previous meeting had not been confirmed.
CO Rohit Kadam informed that following a discussion with the Chairperson on the need for skilled personnel, MMC had written to the GHRDC. He further said that the decision of hiring data operators will be placed before the council for approval.
Earlier in the day, Shirodkar pointed out that the five data operators were going to receive a salary of Rs 27,000 and said that this was an injustice to all the job seekers, especially those who live in MMC’s jurisdiction as they too could have applied for these positions.
He stated that at the last council meeting, a decision was taken to hire interns for a stipend of Rs 3,000.
“The decision regarding the data operators from GHRDC has come as a shock to me,” Shirodkar stated and slammed the Chief Officer for not being able to provide him with information about the same when he went to inquire about this decision.
He said “If anyone has to be hired it has to be done through an interview process and not direct selection. The five persons are being selected to serve the interest of politicians.”
Shirodkar also questioned the role of the MLAs in the decision given that the ruling group of councillors is backed by the Margao and Fatorda MLAs.
