MARGAO: Calling an urgent attention of the Davorlim-Dicarpale Village Panchayat and police authority, a group of women on Monday demanded to initiate action plans in order to crack a whip on the illegal gambling dens and activities linked to drugs in the jurisdiction of the panchayat.
However, Sarpanch Herculano Niasso informed that the panchayat has already submitted a memorandum to the police and other concerned authorities in this regard and even identified the locations.
Speaking to mediapersons, Sheetal Gunjikar, from Dicarpale said that recent murder case that reported at Nessai was result of anti-social activities that has increased in the locality for the past few years.
“We have noticed some disturbing incidents at Davorlim-Dicarpale, wherein youth are
involved in anti-social activities such as gambling and getting addicted to the drugs. It has resulted in major unhealthy conditions in several families,” she informed.
She claimed that the life of several youth is being spoilt due to the casino dens that have been operating in the panchayat areas and no actions from the concerned authorities have worsened the situations.
Demanding the panchayat to initiate action, Sheetal also urged the police to patrol and crack the whip on the gambling dens.
“We have even witnessed youth engaged in thefts in their own houses, so that they get money to visit the casino dens,” said Sheetal.
Reacting to the issue, Sarpanch Herculano said that in September, they had submitted a memorandum to the police and even helped in identifying a few points where the anti-social activities are in full swing.
“It has also been brought to our notice that several illegal local casinos are set up in rooms and flats, besides small sheds in the jurisdiction of Davorlim-Dicarpale Village Panchayat. Such types of activities are causing disputes in the families,” he stated.
He said that the panchayat had requested the police to intensify night patrolling and crack the whip on the illegal gambling dens.
“It has been noticed that there are a number of cases where robberies and attacks have taken place during the night time. Drugs too are being supplied in the village and hence the police need to initiate action to stop all such anti-social activities,” the sarpanch urged.
Maina-Curtorim Police Inspector Mohan Gaude said that they are keeping strict vigil on the anti-social activities, and seek support for the local representatives in initiating the action.
