MARGAO: Davorlim-Dicarpale Panchayat on Tuesday held a meeting with all bar owners and liquor vendors in the village to discuss the implications of the Supreme Court order banning sale of alcohol along National and State highways in the country.
Around 15 villagers attended the meeting and pointed out about the confusion prevailing as to which is the State highway that is passing through their village. While some said it was the road passing through the military camp, others said it was the one passing by the side of the panchayat building.
While the panchayat assured to get this matter clarified, Sarpanch Tulsidas Dessai requested those gathered to remove signages of liquor vends and advertisements of alcohol products that have been put up at the places where alcohol is available.
He pointed out that the Director of Panchayat has directed the panchayats to remove all signages of alcohol products including advertisements from public places along the highways and appealed to the owners of bars to comply with his request.
He clarified that the panchayat is not closing down the liquor vends but only asking the vendors to remove the hoardings and other public display of alcohol.
He revealed that the owners of the shops will also be sent a letter asking them to remove the sign boards and action will be taken if they challenge the panchayat’s move.
