MARGAO: Fearing severe health risk due to garbage littered along the road, residents of Davorlim on Monday demanded that the trash be cleared at the earliest, while at the same time members of village panchayat Davorlim-Dicarpale blamed the migrants for the nuisance.
Speaking to reporters, the locals warned that they will block the road if the garbage is not cleared immediately and strict action against the culprits involved in dumping the waste is not taken.
A huge quantity of garbage is seen dumped on the roadside, despite warnings issued by the panchayat body. The locals alleged that migrants residing in the rented rooms and few outsiders have been noticed dumping waste. It has already resulted in health hazards as the stink is unbearable.
Farida Shaikh, local resident, told reporters that the village panchayat should immediately take up the matter and clean the site, before it results in major health problems.
“There is no action yet from the concerned authorities, despite numerous complaints,” she alleged.
Varsha Chimulkar informed that she has already filed a petition on the matter before the High Court, seeking a solution to this vexed problem.
“We have even informed the local MLA about this issue, but nothing has been done so far. We were forced to knock on the doors of the Court as the concerned authorities failed to address our issues pertaining to the illegal dumping of waste on the roadside,” she informed.
However, Herculano Niasso, Sarpanch of Village panchayat Davorlim-Dicarpale informed that the panchayat is regularly cleaning the sites, but people keep on dumping waste on the roadside.
“Panchayat has taken this issue very seriously, but the people should also think twice before engaging in dumping the garbage on the
roadside. Panchayat is in the process of completing the erection of a material recovery facility (MRF) shed, which will help us to resolve the issue,” he said.
Local MLA Ulhas Tuenkar is also of the opinion that garbage on the roadside has caused inconvenience to the residents and assured of help to the panchayat in order to resolve this issue.
