Davorlim villagers agitate over ‘denial’ of wheat at fair price shop

MARGAO: Tension prevailed at Fair Price Shop No. 40 situated at Laimati in Davorlim over the ration being given to the people and the situation was diffused by the Civil Supplies Inspector Arun rushing to the place and the fair price shop owner agreeing to sell wheat from Sunday.

People were angry as the fair price shop owner Minguel Costa was not supplying wheat to them. Even as Minguel explained that wheat is to be given only to the APL card holders and not the BPL card holders, the APL card holders said they have never got any wheat from the shop.

Incidentally, this is the only fair price shop in the village that caters to the residents of different wards like Indona, Cotta, Tolleaband, Zoriwado, Davorlim and Dicarpale and the people were also angry as the shop is open only in the afternoon from 3 pm to 5.30 pm.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the shop is now kept open the whole day and will be open even on Sunday, said Minguel who reportedly told the inspector that he had stored the wheat at his residence because he wanted to first give rice to the people.

Arun said that the problem has been resolved and from Sunday wheat would also be disbursed but pointed out that under the scheme of free ration all cards will be given 5 kgs of rice free and they can purchase additional 5 kg rice at the rate of Rs 3 per kg.

“Wheat will be sold only to the APL card holders at the rate of Rs 10 per kg and each card will be given only 6 kgs of wheat,” Arun said.
