MARGAO: The State government has begun efforts to remove water hyacinth infestation from River Sal, particularly in the Benaulim-Khareband area.
For this, a mechanical aquatic weed harvester with 1.8 tons capacity operated continuously along Benaulim stretch, part of a three-year maintenance contract. The harvester is expected to de-weed at least two kilometres by mid-June, ensuring the river remains navigable during the monsoon. This is the third consecutive year of de-weeding operations after desilting by the Water Resources Department (WRD). Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas, acknowledged the delay due to election code but remained optimistic about completing the two-kilometre stretch.
Criticising the government’s neglect, Viegas highlighted untreated sewage entering the river from Margao and Khareband.
