Vasco: A dead whale was spotted on the shore at Bimbvel beach Vasco on Monday afternoon.
The forest department officials carried out an inspection of the partially decomposed whale and said they will bury it on Tuesday, due to lack of space.
Sources said the locals believe the body of the whale had washed up onto the shore two days back. It later started emitting a foul smell which drew the attention of the locals.
When contacted Siddesh Gawade, Range Forest Officer, said that he received a call to his office, intimating them about the presence of of a huge whale at Bimbvel, Varunapuri -Vasco and that it had started decomposing and emitting a foul smell.
“On this complaint, I along with my rescue team rushed to Varunapuri. As per standard procedure, I inspected the dead whale for veterinary post mortem but I found that the whale was in a partially decomposed condition and might have dead for more than a day’s time” he added. When asked whether, he will conduct post mortem of the dead whale, Gawade said that post mortem could have been done if the whale was not decomposed. “But now it has already started decomposing. On Monday, we were looking for a place to bury the mortal remains of the whale but the beach stretch is very short therefore, we will bury it at a nearby site that we have found” he added.
We could have done the burial process on Monday itself but we found that there is limited access to the site and we cannot take crane to shift dead whale as it is inaccessible to the site and the whale is in a decomposed state. On Tuesday, we will bury this whale manually with the help of labors” added Gawade.
