PONDA: The Curti junction on the Ponda- Belgaum highway is turning out to be a death trap for motorists.
Locals have criticized the faulty engineering, which they feel is the root cause behind the confusion prevailing at the Curti junction and the corresponding rise in number of fatal accidents. They say the faulty design, has forced the service road to be used as a two-way road, for vehicles coming to Ponda in one direction and then in the other direction, there are vehicles heading towards Khandepar and Belgaum.
Locals point out that the junction is at an area where several roads meet at the Curti and Amigo junction and that the National Highway authorities should have provided a one way road.
Further, with the work progressing on the flyover at the Amigo junction, there are no signboards which can give a warning sign to vehicles which travel at great speeds.
According to Shankar Naik, the road proceeding from Ponda City to Khandepar has been blocked by NH Authorities near Sateri Temple. Naik feels that an underpass was required at this spot and without it; there is chaos and confusion, which leads to accidents.
One bike rider K. Chandrashekhar from Belgaum said he is totally confused at the roads at Amigo junction as several roads besides the service roads intercept at the near the flyover. He stressed that this road requires sign boards for vehicles proceeding in different directions as well signboard asking vehicles to slow down where the roads are intercepting at the junctions.
Locals blame the government and questioned how after spending crores of rupees, these kind of problems were not addressed. They have demanded that PWD minister Deepak Pauskar inspect the Curti – Khandepar road urgently and find solutions to the these problems.
