PORVORIM: Threatening to step up their agitation if the unique cable-stayed bridge at Corjuem is not illuminated by December 31, residents of Corjuem-Aldona have also volunteered to contribute and procure light fixtures and install them on the bridge.
In a press note, Amarnath Panjiker and Benny de Mello stated on behalf of aggrieved residents of Corjuem that a peaceful candlelight protest rally had been staged on December 9 to highlight the deteriorating condition of the bridge.
They claimed that this protest rally was necessitated after a written petition by the Aldona Civic and Consumer Forum to the deputy collector in October had fallen on deaf ears.
“The government had announced that it would carry out maintenance and beatification work of this bridge. But the need of the hour is to fix some basic lights to make the night crossing safer for pedestrians and vehicles alike. Aldona Panchayat has also failed to act promptly in this regard,” stated the press note.
“The bridge stood in darkness even on Liberation Day, which speaks about the sorry state of affairs. If the government permits, the villagers are prepared to contribute money to purchase and procure light fixtures and install them on the bridge.”
“A high mast lamp adjacent to the bridge has also been neglected by authorities. If lights are reinstalled on this high mast, it will illuminate the entire bridge and bring about much-needed relief to the people using this bridge,” concludes the press note.
