Decision to implement AI as subject for Class IX and X kept on hold

Goa Board might introduce subject only for students of Class XI from the current academic year; issues circular to secondary and HSS informing about decision

PANJIM: With Coding and Robotics syllabus being implemented for students studying in Class IX and X, the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has decided to keep on hold the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for these classes. The subject might be introduced only for the students of Class XI from the current academic year.

The Goa government implemented the Coding and Robotics Education Scheme (CARES) from the academic year 2021-22 in Classes VI, VII, VIII, in all the government and government aided schools in Goa. The same was extended to class IX and X by the Goa board since last academic year.

Considering the growing demand for skilled workforce in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI), the Goa Board last month announced implementation of AI as additional subject for class IX onwards starting from this term.

Speaking to O Heraldo, Goa Board chairman Bhagirath Shetye said that the decision to implement AI subject is been kept on hold for now. “Robotics and coding subject are already been taught for students of Class IX and X and hence we decided not to go ahead with AI for them,” he said.

“By next week, we will take decision to implement the subject only for Class XI as additional subject in line with in National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) scheme,” Shetye said.

The Board has issued a circular in this regard to all the secondary and higher secondary schools informing them about the decision.

On June 8, via a circular the Board had said that the subject AI will be implemented in all schools, including those which are not offering NSQF subjects.

For AI, the students will have 40 marks theory – 20 marks each for first and second term and 60 marks practical- 30 marks each for first and second term.

The Board has said that computer teachers will be trained in AI and ICT revised syllabus.
