SGPDA retail market issues, pollution of wells discussed

MARGAO: TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai in the review meeting has taken some decisive steps towards providing solutions to long pending issues of Fatorda and Margao. The Minister has decided to solve the traffic related and the SGPDA retail market issues faced by the people daily. Pollution of wells has also been discussed and solutions from the relevant authorities has been sought.
The Minister has made the Thursday meeting a regular feature now. While discussions the people complained that they have been having a tough time passing through the SGPDA retail Market. The people said since many of the retailers were sitting on the walking path, people were discouraged from going to the market.
When questioned, SGPDA official revealed they had approached the fish, fruit and vegetable retailers requesting them to sit on the platforms and clear the walking path. They, however, attacked the retailers. The TCP Minister Vijai said, “If the retailers don’t comply then request them to do it. If they still don’t agree tell them we will start a parallel market in Fatorda for fish. We have fisheries department with us and in no time we can park 4-5 fish vehicles all over Fatorda. Try to convince them first.”
Couple of Fatorda residents complained their wells have gone from bad to worse in recent times and it is due to the discharge of sewage into the rain water drains. “My well is polluted due to the sewage water discharged into the gutters. This is the same well which we drank water from till some years back. We want our wells revived” said a Fatorda resident.
The TCP Minister has asked the Sewerage Department to explore a possibility wherein a legislation can be brought in to make the sewage connection mandatory for all. The Minister also told the MMC to prepare a letter addressed to the Government with regards the status of the wells of the areas.
Meanwhile the MMC replying to questions about the pre monsoon preparedness said major works have been done by the WRD and 50% work is done from the MMC side with 60 daily wage workers. Since the MMC could not hire workers for premonsoon works on time they have been asked to execute the same with the help of the PWD.
A discussion on what do people want to have at KTC was also held wherein the Minister told that he has suggested to the Chief Minister to have a competition of architects from around India to design the bus stand in a predefined aesthetic and the best winning design be awarded. “I am not against having an amusement park or a resort if people prefer and want it. But I definitely have reservation on having a PPP model which eventually is of no use to the land and the people of South Goa,” said Vijai.
