PANJIM: It has happened yet again. A pile of discarded carnival decorations lay in front of the Old Secretariat, Monday after the much hyped Carnival parade in Panjim, highlighting the shocking lack of civic sense and impunity with which decorators treat the general public, after they have made their buck.
This may also reflect governance deficit with authorities failing to either impose or enforce the guidelines for clearing the mess left behind after an event.
The Corporation of the City of Panaji does not seem to have upped the ante against such events and organisers even after they had to clear piles of garbage left behind by two recent events ~ Lok Utsav and Grape Escapade, all at the tax payers’ cost.
The carnival festivities are on and will end Tuesday with the prize distribution and the traditional Red and Black dance. However, the discarded thermocol décor, left behind by decorators and floats after the carnival parade Saturday gave an ugly look to the city.
“I will look into it,” Mayor Vaidehi Naik told media, promising to clear it.
The Tourism Ministry and the City Corporation had both admitted that mega events draw large crowds and require a proper garbage collection system to be put in place, but what are they waiting for?
