MARGAO: Residents of Borda, Gogol, Arlem and Raia submitted a memorandum to Chairperson of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Damodar Shirodkar, demanding that the non-functioning traffic signal at the Bolshe Circle be repaired immediately.
A delegation of locals led by Dr Sneha Bhagat and Anthony Barbosa highlighted the difficulties road-users face and recalled the number of accidents and other mishaps that have taken place at the circle, which is a very busy junction.
The residents also spoke about the time they had seen or were personally involved in a situation at the circle, where they narrowly missed getting injured.
“The traffic signal has not been working for the last few months. What makes it worse is that the orange light on that traffic signal keeps blinking. This causes more confusion and sometimes commuters see it and press their brakes and then a vehicle hits them from behind,” said Barbosa.
MMC Chairperson Shirodkar said he had already spoken to the Traffic Police about this as the councillors from Fatorda had raised the issue as well.
He added that the electricity expenses for the signals at the Old Market and Bolshe circles are taken care of by the MMC.
However, he said he did not know who looks after the maintenance and repair of the signals and added that it posed a financial burden on the MMC as it comes to Rs 7 to 8 lakh.
Shirodkar added that he would place the issue before the council.
