MARGAO: The three traffic signals in Fatorda which have not been functioning for months, were finally restored on Thursday.
Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Damodar Shirodkar addressed media persons on Thursday evening after inspecting the three traffic signals that had become the bone of contention between him and his rival camp.
Shirodkar explained that the delay was due to the issue of taking financial responsibility and also because several technical issues with the electronic parts of the signals had to be addressed. The Chairperson said they had roped in the same agency that had installed the traffic signals to repair them, and added that the agency had asked if they could display advertisements around the signals as a way of earning revenue.
Shirodkar explained that the High Court had issued guidelines on this subject and they had found a solution that would not violate the guidelines.“The civic body will not have to spend a single rupee on the maintenance of these traffic signals, as the agency will use the money generated from the advertisements to maintain them,” he said.
Shirodkar also hit out at his detractors and said that he, as a chairperson, followed due process on this and ensured that the civic body was not financially burdened either.
