PANJIM: Contract employees from the Ponda Post Office, who were suddenly dismissed from service, submitted a memorandum to Union Minister of State Shripad Naik, on Friday.

The memorandum demanded immediate withdrawal of the Maharashtra GDS/Postman appointed in Goa and to reinstate Goan employees’ services in the post office.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Vice President Adv Surel Tilve, who accompanied the dismissed workers, urged the Union Minister to raise the issue in Parliament and to demand changes in the recruitment rules so that Goan youth receive preferential treatment in all the Central government departments having offices in the State. Additionally, Tilve advocated that the knowledge of official language Konkani be made compulsory for such posts.
At the same time, Tilve exposed that in accordance with the Department of Posts, India’s recent notification, 56 more Goan postmen will soon lose their employment as the Department of Posts has asked for willingness of Gramin Dakh Sevak (GDS) for these 56 postmen and MTS posts.
“All GDS selected this year are from Maharashtra and not a single has been selected from Goa,” he said.
According to Tilve, “Ponda postmen who have been employed for more than 18 years were called at the Post Master’s office at Ponda and the department mobiles which were in their possession were taken back from them. Then they were informed that they were all relieved from the job and seven new Gramin Dakh Sevak (GDS) had been appointed in their place”.
