VASCO: In a tragic accident, a 26-year-old woman from Delhi riding pillion was killed while her husband sustained injuries at Zuarinagar-Sancoale highway on Wednesday.
The tragedy occurred when the couple was on their way to hand over the rent-a-bike to the owner and catch a flight at Dabolim airport to return home.
According to the Verna Police, the deceased Preeti Arya and her husband Pranab Mallik (29) were proceeding on a rent-a-bike. On reaching near Zuarinagar, their two-wheeler collided against a parked car whose front tyre had punctured.
Following collision, both were thrown on the road and the deceased came under the wheels of a speeding car heading in the same direction on the highway.
The couple were from East Patel Nagar, Delhi and were holidaying in the State. They had hired rent-a-bike from Dabolim Airport on November 10.
The car driver Francis Mascarenhas said he had no chance to save the deceased as she came under the wheels of his car. He said that the couple was in front of him and the woman riding pillion was holding a suitcase. Their two-wheeler first dashed against a car parked roadside and with the collision fell on the highway in front of his car.
“I was also going to the Dabolim airport in the same lane and I had absolutely no chance to save her as she was crushed under the wheels,” said Mascarenhas.
Vasco Traffic Cell PI Sudesh Narvekar, who rushed to the spot said that the accident was unfortunate and appealed to the riders and motorists to drive cautiously so that in case of such eventuality, they can control their vehicles.
The Verna Police later conducted the panchanama and sent the body to the hospital for post-mortem examination.
