MARGAO: Social worker Warren Alemao along with some Colva locals have demanded that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant looks into the contamination of Colva creek and forms a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged misuse of taxpayer’s money with regard to recent works taken up to clean the creek.
Alemao slammed the Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas for the condition of the creek and said the measures taken so far had not yielded any results despite a lot of money having been spent so far. He further questioned the role of the company hired to take up the work.
Alemao demanded that SIT book the offenders who have allegedly misused taxpayers’ money.
Alemao, a social worker who is also the nephew of former Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao, referred to the information that was submitted to Colva resident Angelo Fernandes, who had filed an application under RTI Act seeking information about the scope of works at the Colva creek.
Alemao further referred to complaints received by Colva youth and shared images of the creek water and sewage contamination. He lamented that the stench emanating from the creek dilutes the value of the beach and took a dig at the present MLA’s remark about high footfalls on the beach when such issues have not been resolved.
Alemao also demanded that the MLA ensures that hotels responsible for dumping waste water into the creek stop polluting the creek.
Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas who had inspected the Colva creek on Monday brushed aside the allegations levelled against him by Alemao. Pointing out that the people of Benaulim constituency know the work he has done, he said “The people voted for ‘bodol’ (change) and peace of mind and both of these things can be seen in the last 11 months since I have become the legislator.”
