MARGAO: A seafarer has petitioned to the office of NRI Commissioner demanding a CBI inquiry into the alleged custodial death of late Cipriano Fernandes who was a seafarer so that he would get justice.
Former GSAI Secretary Benny Da Costa said a CBI inquiry should be initiated so that the police concern can be booked. He demanded to know how the police can inquire when the men in uniform themselves are the accused in the case. “It is a serious issue – death in custody and this seafarer neither has parents nor family to fight,” he added.
“The police seeking permission to close the case due to lack of evidence itself shows that they are not serious and there is no one to fight for him. Can the law of the land give him justice,” he demanded to know.
Benny said the BJP had promised to set up a Seafarers Cell under NRI Commissioner which has not yet seen the light of day. “It would have take care of so many issues faced by the seafarers of Goa.”
