margao: Curtorim Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Wednesday called upon the State government to immediately demolish the remaining two buildings at Ruby Residency in Canacona.

“Prolonging with the said two buildings would be inviting another catastrophic disaster which will this time bury hundreds of innocent investors who may fall prey to these faulty constructed buildings, he said.

The Ruby Residency building, which was under construction in Canacona collapsed on January 4, 2014 killing 31 persons, mostly labourers.

Reminding the govt about the 7-year-old ghastly incident, Reginaldo alleged that there is cosmetic repairs being done  to these buildings, which have been standing since January 2014.

“A committee constituted by the then government led by Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar comprised of experts from Goa Engineering College which did a thorough investigation and advised dropping all the remaining three 5-storied buildings as the structures are unstable. However, sadly only one of them was demolished for namesake,” he complained.

“It is important to note that the report submitted by commission of inquiry into the tragedy, citied the reasons for the collapse, such as poor conceptual design; inherent faulty structural design and defective execution of work at the site; man-made filled up island and other factors. One wonders how our State government continues to turn a blind eye to the matter after the furore that surrounded the official ‘State’ disaster,” he concluded.
