Dengue cases on the rise in the Port Town

A surge in reported cases of dengue has emerged as a growing concern in the port town in recent times, prompting the Urban Health Department to rally the community in a united effort against the outbreak. Leading this initiative is Dr. Paresh Lawande, the overseeing authority at the Vasco Urban Health Centre. In his assessment, the root cause of the outbreak lies in the irregular water supply plaguing the town. This forces residents to store water in containers, unwittingly providing ideal breeding sites for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Dr. Lawande emphasized the urgency of the situation while expressing gratitude that no instances of malaria have been reported within the jurisdiction so far. He highlighted that collaborative action is imperative to curb the dengue spread effectively. The Vasco Urban Health Centre is now calling upon the town’s residents to actively engage in various preventative measures to combat the outbreak and halt mosquito breeding.

To thwart the dengue epidemic and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, the community is encouraged to take several proactive steps:

1. Eliminate Stagnant Water: Regularly inspect and empty containers, flowerpots, and other items that collect stagnant water. This will prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs and disrupt their life cycle.

2. Properly Cover Containers: Seal water storage containers tightly to prevent mosquitoes from accessing them. This simple measure can drastically reduce their breeding sites.

3. Maintain Clean Drains: Ensure that drains and gutters are clean and free of debris, allowing water to flow smoothly and preventing the accumulation of standing water.

4. Use Mosquito Nets and Screens: Sleep under mosquito nets, and install screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of living spaces.

5. Wear Protective Clothing: When outdoors, wear long sleeves, pants, and mosquito repellent to minimize exposure to mosquito bites.

6. Promote Hygiene and Sanitation: Emphasize proper waste disposal and sanitation practices to reduce attractants for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

By adopting these preventive measures and fostering a sense of shared responsibility, the port town can effectively combat the dengue outbreak and mitigate the risk of further mosquito-borne diseases.
