Dental College yet to scrap new fees, allege students

PANJIM: Two months after Health Minister Vishwajit Rane announced to roll back the hike in the tuition fees in Goa Dental College, the students allege that the institution is yet to scrap the new fees, which was more than 800 per cent for various postgraduate courses.

As per the notification issued on November 6, 2020; per semester fees were hiked from Rs 12,000 to Rs one lakh for the students, who had approached the government demanding not to implement the revised fee structure.

However, following uproar from student community, Health Minister had on December 5, 2020 announced that there will be no increase in the fees for both the institutions of Goa Dental College and that the notification was issued as a result of communication gap between the college and the Directorate of Health Services.

However, two months down the line, the students allege that they are forced to pay the new revised fees by the institution.

“Students have been forced to pay the revised fees that are Rs one lakh per semester as the institute has not received any official communication from the health department to roll back the fees,” a student said.

The students have sought immediate intervention of the Health Minister, who had announced to have issued necessary instructions, not to increase the fees. “There is no official communication from the Health Department to the College. Hence, the college has forced us to pay the revised fees, which are exorbitant. In this COVID pandemic time, it is not just possible for our parents to pay such huge fees,” another student said.
