PANJIM: Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar announced that he would hike the stipend of post-graduate students at the Goa Dental College and begin construction of the second phase of the Goa Dental College and Hospital.

He was speaking at the annual day function of the college.

The announcement drew loud cheers and applause especially from the postgraduate students of the college. Parsekar said, “The government is also seriously thinking of fulfilling the long-pending demand of postgraduate students. Enhancement of stipend will be effective from the next financial year.”

The minister also assured the gathering that construction of the new phase of the college would begin within the next couple of months. “Phase two is becoming a reality. Construction will commence in the next couple of months,” Parsekar said while also assuring to look into issues such as creation of posts, recruitment of qualified staff as well as getting hold of more equipment like dental chairs, better radiology equipment and other cutting-edge instruments for use in the college all of which have been long pending demands of the college.

Parsekar’s promises came after Dean of the College Dr Ida de Noronha de Ataide in her speech highlighted not only the achievements of the college, but also the deficiencies.

While the college has made large strides in areas such as research with its students and staff presenting papers at national-level conferences, the deficiencies such as those of creation of posts, a dental ambulance, new state-of-the-art operation theatres, cone-beam computed tomography, dental chairs, radiology equipment and importantly a maintenance policy for all the new equipment, ancillary staff to maintain this equipment, were also highlighted in the Dean’s speech.
