Depositers of Mashel Mahila Co-op Credit Sty protest at Azad Maidan

PANJIM: A large number of women who have their deposits invested in the Mashel Mahila Co-operative Credit Society Ltd, organised a protest at Azad Maidan in Panjim on Thursday. They lamented that their hard-earned money was stuck with the bank that has been facing restrictions from 2020. They alleged that money to the tune of Rs 18 crore of nearly 509 depositors has been held up by the society.

Several depositors who are senior citizens said that they have invested their life savings in the Society and are struggling to get the money back now. Besides the women protestors, there were senior male citizens too at the protest site.

They urged the State government and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to urgently intervene in the matter and facilitate withdrawal of their deposited money.

They further accused the directors and staff of being involved in the alleged fraud.

It may be recalled that after discovering irregularities in the functioning of the Deulwada, Marcel, based society, the State Registrar of Co-operative Societies, had placed the society under restrictions for non-compliance with statutory requirements and failure to safeguard depositors’ interests.
