PANJIM: Transport Department on Monday issued a circular to all registration authorities to commence registration of transport category vehicles which do not posses insurance, three years for cars and five years for two-wheelers.
As per the circular, the registering authority can now register the new cars and two wheelers based on their existing insurance scheme of one year. This is subject to the condition that applicant will submit an undertaking/affidavit stating that ‘before the expiry of the insurance cover for this one year, he/she shall renew the insurance cover for the next two years or till such time the insurance companies come with the insurance schemes of three years whichever is earlier, failing which the registration of their vehicle would be liable to be terminated.’
Transport Director Nikhil Desai said this will provide relief to over 300 owners whose vehicles were held up for registration based on the order of the Supreme Court. “The order is issued after seeking advise of law department,” he added.
The Supreme Court had last year ordered that from September 1, 2018 no new vehicle would be sold without the mandatory third party insurance cover wherein three-year insurance policy is mandatory for cars and a five-year policy for two-wheelers at the time of sale.
