MARGAO: The South Goa Planning Department Authority (SGPDA) Chairman Wilfred D’Sa has written to the Chief Minister and Fisheries Minister requesting to provide an inspector at the wholesale fish market to conduct random checks on fish brought into the market.
Reminding the Chief Minister and Fisheries Minister of the formalin in fish issue that rocked the State, Nuvem MLA stated “As you are aware that during the fishing ban period lot of outside fish is entering the wholesale fish market and in the past the issue of formalin created fear and anxiety in the minds of Goan community. In view of the above, it is very important to do random checking of fish entering the wholesale fish market on a daily basis.”
D’Sa requested both the Chief Minister and Fisheries Minister to instruct the Directorate of Fisheries to depute an inspector on daily basis between 5 am and 1 pm at the SGPDA wholesale fish market at Margao to conduct random checking of fish entering the market.
“The SGPDA will appoint staff on a contract basis to assist the inspector and a separate office will be operated in the wholesale fish market for random checks of fish entering the market on a daily basis,” pledged D’Sa.
“Also, formalin testing kits will be kept for the public in the said office to check the fish purchased by them,” said the SGPDA chairman.
SGPDA is yet to take a decision to open the market.
