MARGAO: Despite a case pending before the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the land filling activity near the river bank at Seraulim for the proposed western bypass continued in full swing on Saturday with social activists besides locals demanding that the activity be stopped immediately.
Several trucks with mud and black material were engaged in land filling at the site. The public alleged that the concerned authority is involved in bypassing the orders of the National Green Tribunal with regard to the stretch of road from Seraulim to Varca.
“Black material is dumped along the river banks”, alleged Royla Fernandes.
Several citizens and social activists from Seraulim and Benaulim strongly opposed the ongoing work of western bypass at Seraulim, near the wholesale fish market.
Recently, the court had directed the Goa government and concerned authorities to re-work on the disputed stretch of western bypass. However, now it has been noticed that work of land filling continues, despite court directions.
Earlier, Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao had clarified that the works with regard to construct the tents to store the material will commence at the site, and it has nothing to do with the re-starting of Western Bypass.
At the moment locals are suspicious over the land filling work since the last few days.
