Despite caution, Narkasur set to be big attraction in Ponda

Ponda: Against the backdrop of the opposition and advisories against holding Narkasur celebrations in view of COVID pandemic, preparations for the traditional festival is on in full swing in Ponda and also other parts of Goa. The display and subsequent burning of effigies is a big attraction for the young and the elderly. 

Organisers in Ponda say that even though this year there are no competitions and processions due to COVID-19, the craze for Narkasur has not been hit. However, they insist that priority will be given for social distancing to avoid crowds. They also point out that there has been a huge demand for Narkasur masks, which have been made by local artists.

Speaking about the calls not to have the same by a few religious organizations as well as politicians, the youth say that feeling of Diwali will not be same, if they don’t enjoy and hold Narkasur celebrations. They also downplayed suggestions that lately the youth end up with bad practices such as  consumption of liquor. They point out that they have been celebrating Narkasur since childhood and it is a tradition for all ages in their respective localities. 

Tulsidas Naik added that senior citizens have informed them that Narkasur is held for the last five to six decades and that it is their belief that if it is not held then some untoward incident will take place.

Another aspect that has become a trend when it comes to Narkasur competitions is the sponsorship by politicians and businessmen. Sometimes the sum can go as high as Rs one lakh. This year, there may not be huge-sized effigy etc but the youth said they will make it with their own money.
