ALDONA: Despite a raid carried out on March 6, illegal sand extraction is going on in full swing near the Hindu crematorium at Postar Quitla, Aldona. Residents fear that the depletion of sand in the river bed will have an adverse effect and could lead to irreversible ecological damage.
It may be recalled that the Assistant Geologist designated for Bardez area carried out a raid at this spot on March 6 and seven people involved in illegal sand extraction were arrested. It came to light that the accused were illegally extracting sand and transporting the same.
Despite complaints and action, the extractors are fearlessly continuing with the rampant sand extraction.
Daily at least 50 trucks transporting sand ply along the Aldona-Nachinola-Moira route. Due to the continuous transportation of sand along the route the sand spilled along the road poses a risk for the commuters.
The Mines and Geology official designated for Bardez taluka had assured to stop the activity and keep a vigilant watch in the area and seize trucks involved in this illegal activity.
The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Amarnath Panjikar said if rampant and illegal sand extraction continues from Quitla, Aldona River then it is a serious issue, which needs to be addressed by the local MLA. “It is definitely illegal and despite a raid being carried out if sand continues to be extracted fearlessly it is a matter of concern,” said Panjikar.
A local on the condition of anonymity said sand mining is going on for over a year in the village. “Currently it is being carried out on a large scale and is operated locally”.
It may be recalled that on February 20, a member of Goencho Avaaz informed the Assistant Geologist designated for Bardez area about the illegal activity. Finally, two weeks later, a raid was carried out but the illegal extraction continues unabated.
Locals allege that the sand mafia are working in connivance with the concerned authorities.
