PONDA: The roads in Ponda have always remained accident prone despite widening them. Faulty engineering of highways at some places is also causing accidents.
A total of 284 accidents were reported in Ponda taluka in 2019. Of these,
28 were fatal, taking the lives of 30 — 16 two-wheeler riders, five pedestrians and three drivers. At least 47 were seriously injured in these accidents. In 2018, the fatal accidents were 23 resulting in the deaths of 24.
The two-wheeler riders were hit most of time by heavy and light vehicles, while some were self accidents. The reasons for the death of two-wheeler riders are not wearing of helmets, rash driving and speeding heavy vehicles.
Two fatal accidents were also reported on the newly constructed four-lane
highway at Dhavlim when crane collapsed from the flyover while
some fatal accidents were reported on Curti-Kerya highway.
