Despite warnings by civic body, MMC workers continue to burn waste

MARGAO: The workers of Margao Municipality continued to burn waste in the early morning hours, despite repeated warnings issued to them by the civic body resulting in major air pollution in the commercial city of Margao.

Piles of garbage burnt along the roadside were witnessed even by the citizens who later charged the municipality for being insensitive to environmental pollution. Citizens have now demanded strict action against all those workers involved in setting fire to the dry waste.

“There is a total ban on burning of such waste and it is by law as it leads to major pollution and but the authorities need to keep vigil,” said Savio Coutinho.

He further hit out at the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) for not taking these issues seriously.

“It looks like the GSPCB has become a pollution creator rather than pollution controller,” he opined.

Agostinho Carvalho, another citizen said that one can easily notice activities of burning of waste around the municipal garden itself.

“I can even go further and say that 25 percent of the waste transported to the Sonsodo dump yard is burnt there and there, causing pollution in the area. This has to be stopped and the pollution control board needs to take action at the earliest,” he stated.

However, Damodar Shirodkar, Chairperson of MMC assured that such type of activities will be stopped immediately.

“Will ask the concerned supervisors to keep watch on such activities as it results in pollution besides waste cannot be burnt,” he stated.

Chairman of the Sanitary Committee of the civic body councillor Camilo Barretto said that they had discussed the issue at the recently held meeting and instructions were issued to the sweepers.
