MARGAO: Ponda Police’s failure to solve the murder of an unknown lady on August 6, 2018 and Margao Town Police’s failure to arrest the accused who allegedly raped a minor resulted in the detection of heinous crimes to drop 97.14 per cent in 2018 as against the one hundred percent detection in 2017.
In all 70 heinous crimes were registered in the South Goa district in 2018 with heinous crimes being murder, attempt to murder, rape, dacoity and robbery.
Sixteen of the 15 murder cases were detected. Three each murder cases were registered and detected by the Colva, Curchorem and Verna police stations, while two each cases were registered and detected at Margao Town and Fatorda police stations; and one each were registered and detected at Cuncolim and Vasco police stations.
Ponda police could not solve the murder case registered with them where a 35-year-old woman was murdered by slitting her neck and stabbing her on the stomach on the Shahpur hillock near the KTC bus stand. The victim has not been identified till date and that is the major hurdle in solving the crime.
All the 13 attempt to murder cases have been detected with three of them being in the jurisdiction of Colva, Vasco and Ponda police stations and one each at Margao Town, Maina Curtorim, Curchorem and Mormugao police stations.
Of the 29 rape cases registered in South Goa, 28 were detected with the accused arrested. The only case where the accused is not arrested is the one where a minor girl from Dramapur Sirlim was raped by her father’s friend who after committing the crime has gone overseas where he is working.
The highest number of rape cases was reported at Vasco police station where six cases were detected followed by Colva, Canacona and Fatorda police stations where four each cases were detected; three cases were detected by Verna police; and Margao Town police detected only two of the three cases registered with them. Two rape cases were detected by Maina Curtorim and Cuncolim police stations while Mormugao Police Station detected one such case.
Unfortunately Ishwar Makhwana the prime accused in the gang rape case that occurred on May 24, 2018 at Sunset Beach in Betalbatim escaped from police custody while undergoing treatment at a government hospital on the night of December 9, 2018 and was found missing on December 10 morning.
Colva, Cuncolim and Canacona Police stations each detected the dacoity cases registered at their police respective stations. Nine robbery cases were detected in the district with two of them by Curchorem police station and one each by Maina Curtorim, Cuncolim, Canacona, Vasco, Verna, Vasco Railways and Ponda police stations.
