Devise mechanism for panchayats: Carmona sarpanch

MARGAO: The Carmona Sarpanch has requested the government to devise immediate mechanism for the panchayats which have suffered revenue losses during the lockdown.

Sarpanch Allwyn George said since the lockdown imposed on March 22, the functioning of panchayats is in a limbo with all their services paralysed and a full stop on any revenue generation.

“Market auctions have not taken place as such the panchayat loses revenue during this period,” he said.

The panchayats have also been unable to collect various taxes due to lack of clear directions from panchayat authorities. Services to the people are also affected as various certificates cannot be issued. The fortnightly meetings are not held as such the people are still waiting for their construction and trade licenses, occupancy certificates and other approvals.

“It is high time the Government spares a moment and issues clear directives to the panchayats in the Lockdown period,” he requested.

“Revenue of panchayats has reduced to zero since the lockdown, which will directly affect our budget provisions and developmental works,” Allwyn added.
